Dressing up for Halloween is an ancient tradition that has become part of today’s modern world. Halloween comes from the words hallow and eve. It is the evening before "All Hallows Day" and was a holiday for religious festivities in various northern European pagan traditions. It was later given a Christian interpretation by Christian missionaries. It was believed that spirits intent on doing rose from the dead that particular night, and the best way to avoid them was by pretending to be one of them.
Halloween is usually observed on October 31, and is celebrated in most Western countries by children wearing costumes and going door-to-door to collect candy. It is a time when everyone has the chance to dress up and have fun and be as weird as they wants. More than half the fun of course is in choosing the costume.
Traditionally costumes were based on horror such as vampires, ghosts, witches and devils. Today, favorite movie and TV personalities are the top costumes choices. Last year among the top costumes chosen were Spiderman, Witch, Power Rangers, Sponge Bob, Harry Potter, Batman, Athlete, Pop Star, clown and firefighters. Donning the dress of a policeman, fireman, soldier or a fighter pilot is always a sure fire success. People in the public eye like politicians are also often a popular choice.
Once you know what the popular choices are you can choose to either go with crowd or stand out by choosing something totally different. While it could take more time making your own Halloween costume, in the long run it might just be worth it, because it will be truly unique. Of course, obtaining a Halloween costume is no longer a major problem. If you don’t have the time and energy to make it at home, a ready-made costume may be the easy way out.
