Politics, Houston Vs Buffalo

by Linda Polansky

In the early 80s, the Buffalo Bills were one of the best teams in the NFL, as were the Houston Oilers. Both teams had a good season at this time . Warren Moon played for the Oilers and Frank Reich for the Bills. Both teams were playing all season just to be able to go to the playoffs, but one thing that they didn’t know is that they were headed for a showdown. The Bills had won two playoff games on the road, and had a great deal of momentum. The Oilers had a better record in the regular season, and they had home-filled advantage. They had their hometown fans rooting for them, which helped to motivate them to play better than ever.
This meant a lot when it came down to playing all the other teams. In order to advance to the next round of the playoffs, the Oilers had beaten two teams. After beating those two teams, the Oilers had a week to rest, yet the Buffalo Bills didn’t have an opportunity to rest, because they played all their games on the road. Many people wondered if the Oilers would risk losing the Super Bowl by being off, but Bum Phillips said that they wouldn’t because they were studying tapes and having rigid practices just to be able to keep their bodies in shape in order to be able to run with the Bills. Unfortunately, for the Buffalo Bills, things weren’t quite so good for them. The Bills were exhausted from all the constant traveling and playing on the road. They didn’t have a sufficient amount of time to rest before playing with the Oilers, but the coach, Marv Leavy, had better thoughts about the upcoming game. He was aware of the fact that the Oilers had had time to recuperate, but he also knew that his team was extremely determined to win the game. Then they arrived in Houston that Saturday and followed their routine. The coach put them through their usual, rigorous practice, and the Oilers practiced scrupulously as well.
On that Sunday, the day of the big Super Bowl, it was a very good game, and the score was very close throughout the entire game. Near the end, Buffalo had tied things up and kicked-off the Oilers, and the Oilers did a trick-play on the kickoff and won the game on the last play of the game.
