Directory, The Truth About Directories

by Mike Francis

Directories are getting more and more popular lately. They are a good source of quality incoming links, so webmasters use them to get high PR and a good amount of links to their sites.
Because of their increase popularity there has been an increase in directory sites. People make them believing there is easy money into it. This is hardly the truth. There is a lot of hard work and dedication that has to go into a directory before it will bring you money. First of all you will have to make it unique in some way, choose a cool name for it, make a custom skin and add a few useful tools like a page-rank-checker.
Secondly you will have to review and approve or deny all the links that are being submitted to your directory and be prepared because this will take a lot of your time each day, depending on the number of links submitted to you. There will be links placed under wrong categories, some of them you will just delete, but some you will move to the right category, and this will take time.
Thirdly, don’t expect to receive too much traffic from search engines very soon, it will take several months until you will see relevant search engine traffic. First MSN will give you the most traffic, they are the first that pick up what you have to offer, and after that google will follow.
Revenue sources? They are the following: featured links and ads. You will make some money from featured links, around 3-4 featured links per week if you are lucky and depending on your fees. The other revenue source is ads, most directories use AdSense. Don’t expect to make too much money from this, it will be scarce. You will have to have high traffic if you want to make real money from AdSense and directories don’t really bring in high amounts of traffic.
If you made yourself a directory, don’t despair though, it can become a source of income if you stick by it. All you have to do is bring in as much traffic as you can. This can be done using a lot of methods: post on different relevant forums, join directory top sites like topdirectorys(dot)com, and exchange links with other directory owners. Bring in something new and refreshing with your directory and it can become your passion.
One last thing: If you don’t like doing a lot of work for the pleasure of it, and get bored fast, don’t start a directory, go find yourself some other thing to do with your money and your time, because this won’t work for you.
