Health Insurance, Health Insurance

by Kristy Annely

Serious accidents and illness are fortuitous events that happen in a person’s life. No matter how hard you try to avoid them, they happen. Nowadays, health care costs are getting higher and paying for medical bills if you have a serious accident or major illness can give you sleepless nights. That is why it is important that you protect yourself and your family in case you need medical care that could really be expensive. If you have health insurance, a third party will cover many of your costs. They could be your insurance company or your employer. There are two broad categories of health insurance: the traditional and the managed care. The traditional health insurance is known as fee-for-service or indemnity coverage. For years, this was the norm. Under this category, the insured has complete autonomy when it comes to choosing hospitals, doctors, and other health care providers. But this involves more out-of-pocket expenses, and often there is a deductible before the insurance company starts paying. The out-of-pocket expenses have a ceiling, and the ceiling is usually pretty high. On the other hand, managed care is the type of health insurance that involves an arrangement between the insurer and a selected network of health care providers. This also offers the policyholders significant financial incentives in order to use the providers in the network. Under the two broad categories, there are other types of health insurance. These include PPOs or Preferred Provider Organizations, POS or Point-of-Service, and HMOs or Health Maintenance Organizations. No one type of health insurance is better than the other; it all depends on your needs and preferences. It is always up to you to choose between the autonomy offered by fee-for-service plans and the low costs associated with closed-panel HMOs.
