Home, Invest In Home Furnishings That Will Last

by Salihu Ibrahim

Many parents worry about buying new furniture when their children are little because they are afraid it will get ruined. As a result they continue to leave the older furniture in place even though their décor could use a facelift. The furniture industry has finally realized that they are missing out on volumes of sales in this particular niche. As a result they now offer great materials you can choose from that will hold up to both children and pets.

You may be surprised to find that furniture made from leather not only looks beautiful, it is easy to clean up from. You can wipe off spills and food crumbs in a snap. Also, this type of material won’t allow pet hair to cling to it so it can be wiped away with a cloth as well. Some people don’t like the feel of leather furniture though and that is fine, there are some other options as well.

Ultra suede is a type of fabric that is very soft and beautiful. You can easily snuggle up in a chair or couch make from this type of material. If anything gets spilled on it you can wipe it off with a wet rag. It won’t stain or fade as most furniture made from cotton does. If you aren’t convinced these types of materials will offer you a way to protect your furniture, you can place slipcovers over them.

In the past slipcovers looked boring, like a white sheet. These days though they are offered in an array of colors and materials. This way you can use them to decorate your home anyway you desire and still protect your furniture from damages. If you decide to remove your slipcovers in a couple of years you will have furniture that looks brand new.

You want to try to avoid cotton, silk, and velvet when it comes to home furniture. While these materials look great, they stain very easily and it is difficult to get them clean. Even if you don’t allow people to eat or drink on them they can stain from sweat and perfumes on the body. If you select wood furniture, make sure it has a protective coat on it to prevent scratches from appearing.

Many adults have declared a particular area of their home “for adults only”. This is a great way to have the look you want without worrying about children or pets ruining it. Keep in mind though that accidents can happen involving adults as well and you need to be prepared for them. You can also create a great “kids only” area too so they won’t be offended. Make it colorful and even add some bean bag chairs to make it very relaxing.

The design of the furniture is very important to consider as well. If you have children in your home, coffee tables can be an accident waiting to happen. You can get a matching ottoman or a couch that has a center piece that founds down with a cup holder instead.

If you decide to enhance the décor of any room in your home with an area rug, make sure it is securely in place. This is a common item that causes injuries because people can trip over them. Look for area rugs that feature heavy padding underneath as this will help reduce the chances of them moving around.
