Home, Choices In Carpet

by Marlon Allen

Carpet is one of the most popular choices for flooring. It provides a soft and warm surface. There are also many types of carpet from which to choose so a person can find carpet to fit just about any need.
There are four main types of carpet. Carpet is defined by how the pile is designed. The pile of carpet gives it the texture and look each type of carpet is known for.
Cut pile is usually the most expensive type of carpeting. Cut pile carpeting includes Saxony, velvet and plush styles of carpet. Cut pile is made by cutting the loops of the carpet fibers. The fibers then stand up and create a very soft carpet. It is very luxurious carpet that is known for standing up to traffic without crushing down. As mentioned, Saxony is a type of cut pile carpet, but instead of just cutting the carpet fibers the fibers are twisted together and cut. They are very soft, but require a lot of maintenance because they show use easily.
Cut and loop pile has both cut fibers and fibers that are left looped. It has a varied appearance and the multiple levels allow for dirt and footprints to be hidden.
Level loop pile has weaved carpet fibers which makes it very durable. The loops can be weaved tightly or the can be left loose. The shorter loops are easier to clean and works well in a high traffic area. Berber carpet is a good example of a level loop pile carpet. They are quite popular because they are easy to care for and long lasting.
Multi-level loop pile is weaved like level loop pile, but the loops are of varying heights. There are usually two or three different heights of the loop on a single carpet. It has a very textured look to it.
People choose the type of carpet based upon certain factors that will determine its durability and look. They often will choose a carpet based upon the amount of traffic in the room or area where the carpet will be going. Certain carpet types, like cut pile will crush down and show things like footprints and vacuum marks, so this type of carpet would not be good in a high traffic area. Other types like cut and loop pile hides dirt and marks so it would be great for a high traffic area.
In general, cut pile carpets are going to hide dirt well, but also show marks. Uncut pile carpet, on the other hand, is going to show dirt a little more, but not show marks. There are some, like cut and loop pile carpet that is a happy medium that hides both dirt and footprints.
Other considerations about the type of carpet will be based upon the actual look of the carpet and the look that the person is wanting for the room. Multi-level loop carpet, for example, adds an interesting look to a room because of its multi-level design. People also choose carpeting based upon how it feels. For a bedroom, for example, where the traffic will be low and comfort is of the utmost importance, a soft, luxurious carpet, like velvet, may be the best choice.
Among the different types of carpet there are many other choices. There are different styles of each type and, of course, a variety of colors. There are solid colors and then carpeting with designs.
When it comes to looking at the different types of carpet there is something for everyone. There are carpets that work great for almost any need a person could have. That is part of the reason why carpet is such a popular floor covering.
