Carpets, Berber Carpets

by Ross Bainbridge

Berber carpet is a term used today to describe any broadloom that has a natural off-white, feathered look of cloaks. In ancient times, tribesmen in Western Asia used these carpets. Berber carpet has for years been one of the choices for floor covering. It was named after a handmade, bulky textured wool floor covering made by a tribe of the same name located in a region of North Africa. It is made with wool, which is non-toxic, non-allergenic and does not support bacterial growth. Berber carpet is traditionally spun with different multilevel pile heights. Berber utilizes flecked yarns, most often looped, to create crimped wool loops during the manufacturing process. This forms millions of air pockets that cushion the walk, acts as insulators and helps regulate room temperature. This makes Berber carpets very easy to clean, durable and soft to touch. Berbers tend to have thicker yarn content than other carpets. The only real disadvantage is one has to take care and avoid hurdling the loops, which could damage it. Berber is preferred as it shows fewer footprints and hides vacuum tracks. Different styles of Berber designs are known throughout the world; level-loop, multi-level-loop and cut-and-loop are three popular designs. The different sized loops vary from larger ones to smaller tighter ones. The multi level loop carpets have an advantage over the level loop styles, as it is more affordable and easier to maintain. These carpets have self-patterns, which add to the design statement of any given space. There are other types of Berber carpets available such as the herringbone, basket weave and ribbed styles. Some people prefer these as they complement the natural aspect of the decor. Berber carpets are known to be animal friendly, owing to the wool content. Carpets are an economical way of covering the floor. The understated elegance of Berber carpets make it a great choice for both home and office space.
