Birth Control, Birth Control Side Effects

by Eric Morris

Women take birth control pills in order to restrict the size of their families and also get away from the vicious “hand to mouth” cycle of poverty. Some of the women may have side-effects from taking these pills, including nausea, headaches, bleeding between periods, breast tenderness or decreased libido. In such cases a woman should consult her doctor, who can advise her to change her brand to a pill that has a different dose of hormones. Birth control pills that contain estrogen can also increase the risk of blood clots. Women above age thirty-five, and those who smoke or have high blood pressure, have an increased risk of heart attack after taking birth control pills. These pills are not safe for females who have blood clots, heart disease, high blood pressure, severe migraines, heart defects or stroke. There have been cases of women being prone to greater risk of breast cancer. Doctors also advice that women who have breast cancer should not take these pills, as they might affect the growth of tumor tissue. Some research studies have also indicated that birth control pills have adverse affect on the mood and sexuality in some women. Some of the women discontinued having sex due to the consumption of these pills. Although researchers have not found any evidences of deformed childbirth due to taking these pills, a lot has been written on the subject. Doctors’ advise that breast-feeding women should not take these pills, as hormones can reduce milk production.
Although oral contraceptives or birth control pills are an effective and easy mode of avoiding unwanted pregnancy, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before starting with the course.
