Bathrooms, Bathroom Tiles

by Peter Emerson

Bathroom tiles are the most dominant feature in the bathroom. The entire color scheme and style of the bathroom can be based on the kind and color of the tiles used. In the present market, tiles come in a wide range of sizes apart from traditional tiles. Larger tiles tend to make the room look larger as do the micro tiles and mosaic tiles. A combination of these different tiles adds great beauty to the bathroom. Tiles can also be used in different shades of the same color according to the lighting in the room. Tiles are made of various materials, the main ones being ceramic tiles, vinyl tiles and slate floor tiles. Ceramic tiles are always in vogue because of their various advantages like resistance to moisture, wide range of colors and patterns, thousands of designs, and intricate patterns. Ceramic tiles are made of natural clay, fired for hardening. Thicker ceramic tiles last longer because they are much stronger due longer firing period. Ceramic tiles are also available in non-slippery finish especially for bathrooms and kitchens. Other kinds of ceramic tiles are the unglazed ceramic tiles, mosaic tiles and others, available in several sizes. Ceramic tiles are a good choice because of their durability.
Vinyl tiles are generally preferred for kitchens, bathrooms and other areas in the house where the traffic is higher. Vinyl tiles are easy to install and they are available in a very exhaustive range of designs and colors to suit all tastes and preferences. Vinyl floors are basically of two types the earlier method of laying vinyl chips over another layer and fusing them in place. The surface is then covered with a transparent wear layer. Newer vinyl floors are laid through rotogravure construction, wherein the design is printed on vinyl chips using colored inks. Then the chips are covered with a wear layer. There are several advantages of vinyl floors, easy to clean, have a long life, are stain resistant and scratch resistant.
Slate floor tiles come in a variety of hues from the traditional dark gray and black to red and brown. They are now available in several other tones like greens, purples and other warm colors to give a homely look. Slate floors are very affordable compared to granite and marble. They are slip-resistant and are easy to maintain. However, slate tiles are difficult to lay because they are very thick. The sub floor has to be very strong to be able to take the weight. Nevertheless, slate tiles are very easy to maintain and just require regular cleaning.
