Tattoos, Tribal Tattoos

by Peter Emerson

Tribal tattoos are very popular among the tattoo designs. Tribal tattoos are rooted in the culture of indigenous and native tribes. Though done in black ink usually, color tattoos are becoming more popular today. It is believed that tribal tattoos can elevate the spirit, inspiring a positive attitude in the wearer.
The early natives of America practiced tattooing to some extent. It served a variety of purposes depending on location, gender, and intertribal relations. Tribal tattoos were used by certain religious groups in the ancient Mediterranean area. At that time, tribal tattoos helped to identify a person as a member of a local group; these markings also expressed magical, religious, and spiritual convictions and beliefs. Among certain tribal groups, tribal tattoos indicated wealth, tribe affiliation, acts of strength, family, their role in society, and deeds of bravery. It was believed that these tattoos had the ability to cure and prevent the diseases caused by evil spirits. Developing research on tribal people, their lifestyles and arts has increased popular interest in tribal tattoos. Modern tribal tattoos are abstract designs, generally in black. They do not have any particular meaning in the present day. Some categories include tribal fairy tattoos, tribal skull tattoos, tribal angel tattoos, and tribal barbed wire tattoos.
Tribal tattoos are inspired by traditional arts and are made in a variety of designs and colors. Eskimo totems, Maori designs, and Aztec sun clocks are some of the popular ones. Other major designs include tribal suns, Celtic knots, butterflies, crosses, hearts, scorpions, flowers, tribal armbands, dragons, and flames. Some of them are simple lines or circles; some others are highly complicated pieces.
