Horse racing in the United States can be traced back to 1665. Aristocratic settlers from England brought racehorses into the country, and the first racetrack was laid out at Long Island during this period. When a person places a bet on a horse, he is actually betting on the skills of the horse, the jockey and the trainer. Betting can take place through parimutuel pools or bookmakers. The most common types of bets include straight bets, exacta, quinella and sweep.
Win, place and show classify as straight bets. In a ‘win’ bet, to succeed, the bettor must pick the horse that wins the race. A ‘place’ bet allows a person to pick the horse that finishes either first or second. In a ‘show’ bet, the bettor must pick the horse that finishes first, second or third. A gambler wishing to bet in the ‘exacta’ pool must choose two horses, which must finish first and second, as he chose them to, for him to win. The ‘quinella’ pool allows a bettor the choice of picking two horses that may finish and second, but need not specify the exact order of finish. Thus, it is easier to win in a quinella pool, than an exacta pool, though the latter often pays the winner more money.
A bettor must pick any three horses to finish first, second, and third and specify which will finish first, second and third, in order to win a ‘triactor or trifecta’. In a ‘superfecta’ a bettor must pick four horses which finish first, second, third and fourth, and specify the order in which they will finish. To claim a ‘double’, the bettor must pick the winners of two successive races. In the United States a ‘double’ is generally scheduled for the first two events of the day. Racing experts suggest, that rather than simply going on a hunch, collecting information about the different horses improves a bettor’s chance of success at the pools.
