October in many places brings with it seasonal changes as harvest time ends and people prepare for the coming of winter. We have lovely associations with this time of year. In the northern hemisphere as October progresses trees begin to change color, each in their own way. Looking at a forest reveals reds, oranges, yellows, burgundies, and even remaining greens. Fields turn a pale earthy yellow as harvests mature and are brought in. Autumn has a special smell all it’s own.
Foods are associated with this time of year as harvest comes to an end. Squashes and pumpkins bring more yellow and orange onto our tables. Apples come ripe and are made into pies and other delights.
Children are in school in October and it becomes a time for bringing family closer and spending evenings together. In some places it gets cold and some homes light fires in their fireplace. Women pull out knitting needles and knit clothing and gifts for the coming winter.
Everyone is affected by the change in seasons whether we live in an area that has the dramatic of changes of North America and northern Europe or whether we live elsewhere. We are all refreshed by nature’s natural rhythms and our focus shifts. October is a month both for enjoying the out of doors and for settling in to hearth and home.
Use this natural rhythm the earth gives us to refresh yourself and enjoy the season. Find your favorite seasonal foods. Share time with friends. Gather colored leaves or prepare your home for a comfortable winter. Enjoy the autumn equinox, Halloween, or other holiday according to your tradition.
You will that in other countries in other continents, many holidays and festivals are celebrated which have similar significance like Halloween in USA. So if you plan to go on a vacation abroad, do research on the festivals there beforehand so you can attend the same and learn more new things about new cultures.
