Imagine sitting at home and being able to see and talk to your loved ones over a thousand miles away in another continent; or looking from the top of the Eiffel Tower while simultaneously sitting in your living room. Welcome to the world of web cameras, or in short, web cams.
Web cams are small, compact, real time video cameras connected with the World Wide Web, so that anyone can access them from anywhere in the world using the Internet or a video chatting facility. They are basically digital cameras connected to web servers, rendering continuous images or images at regular intervals of time. Web cams are the class of digital cameras connected directly to the PC, used as a means of video calling over the Internet. This is popularly called web cam chatting.
The first web cam, which was developed by Cambridge University, was pointed at the Trojan room coffee pot of their computer science department. This web cam, which is now defunct, was finally switched off on 22nd August 2001. As with many new technologies, the web cam and web cam chatting found their way into commercial use quite effortlessly. It was first adopted aggressively by the ever growing entertainment and information industry for youth. The requirement of live images made them ask a Dutch developer to write software, so that this could be done without the use of plug-ins. This is called live streaming web cam, which is still popular and available in various forms.
There are web cams specially designed for notebook computers, which are very useful for people who are always on the move. These web cams have color sensors which help them capture high quality images at high resolution and live video. They have crystal clear lenses and can be operated by anyone.
